Medusa is an open source C++ implementation of many common meshless methods. It is developed by the Parallel and Distributed Systems Laboratory, Jožef Stefan Institute (JSI). The library has been actively used since 2015 and has been used in practical applications, such as for dynamic thermal rating in icing conditions. It has also been used in a joint project between JSI, Ghent University and University of Luxembourg on fretting fatigue analysis. More recently, it is also being used for Fluid flow in complex porous media, which is a project done in collaboration with University of Wrocław.

See the publications page for more details about citing, if you are using Medusa.

Name and logo

The Medusa library logo.

The Medusa library is named after jellyfish, which reside in subphylum Medusozoa. Additionally, word “medusa” or similar derivatives directly refer to free-swimming marine animals with umbrella-shaped bells and trailing tentacles in many roman and slavic languages.

The name represents the meshless aspect of the library, drawing a parallel between the lack of mesh structure in meshless methods and lack of solid support structure in jellyfish.

The logo of the Medusa library shows the solution of the Poisson boundary value problem $\nabla^2u = 1, u|_{\partial \Omega} = 0$ on the medusa-shaped domain, solved with our library.

The domain shape is available for download here and the logo in vector format is available here.
