Multi-analysis of fretting fatigue using physical and virtual experiments

The fretting fatigue of material is a phenomenon, in which two contact surfaces undergo a small relative oscillatory motion due to cyclic loading. Failure in mechanical components due to fretting fatigue has been reported and investigated in depth in literature, e.g. aerospace riveted joints and aeroengine splined couplings. The fraction of fretting fatigue lifetime spent in crack initiation and in crack propagation is application and parameter dependent, but a clear conclusion from previous research is that both crack initiation and propagation phases are important in analysing fretting fatigue. Recently, it has been demonstrated that fretting fatigue crack propagation paths measured experimentally do not match with those determined numerically. This mismatch in the crack propagation path in turn affects the prediction of the total fatigue lifetime. This project investigates the reason behind this mismatch and proposes methods to overcome the drawbacks of the numerical techniques used in the literature to devise new predictive tools for fretting fatigue. This is a mutli-disciplinary project where each partner provides expertise in a different discipline; UGent-Belgium in fretting fatigue, UL-Luxemburg in advanced discretisation methods for fracture and JSI-Slovenia in parallel computing. The collaboration between the three partners, within the Project Lead Agency programmes FWO/FNR and FWO/ARRS, aims to further develop the understanding of fretting fatigue problem.

Drsno utrujanje snovi je pojav, ki nastane na stični površini dveh sestavnih delov, ki minimalno drsita drug ob drugem zaradi spreminjajočih se obremenitev. Okvare mehanskih komponent zaradi drsnega utrujanja so raziskovali in poročali o njih, med drugim, na področjih kovičenih spojev na letalih in letalskih motorjih. Delež življenjske dobe mehanskih komponent, ki pripada nastanku razpoke in njenemu širjenju je odvisen od primera uporabe in od snovnih parametrov. Iz predhodnih raziskav izhaja, da je razumevanje obeh obdobji ključno za analizo drsnega utrujanja. Nedavno so dokazali, da se poti širjenja razpoke, izmerjene s poskusi, ne ujemajo s tistimi, ki so izračunane z numeričnim modeliranje in simulacijami. To neskladje pomembno vpliva na napoved celotne življenjske dobe drsnega spoja. Predlagani projekt raziskuje razloge za odkrito neskladje in predlaga načine za izboljšanje obstoječih numeričnih metodologij, ki se uporabljajo za napovedovanje razvoja drsnega utrujanja. Projekt je multi-disciplinaren, saj vsak od partnerjev prispeva strokovno znanje in izkušnje iz druge znanstvene discipline, UGent - Belgija s področja drsnega utrujanja, UL- Luxemburg iz naprednih diskretizacijskih metod za analizo zlomov in IJS -Slovenija iz vzporednega računalništva. Sodelovanje med tremi partnerji, ki bo potekalo v okviru programa vodilne agencije FWO/FNR in FWO/ARRS, bo s predlagano raziskavo prispevalo k izboljšanemu razumevanju pojava drsnega utrujanja komponent.
